Sexual Harassment

Once in a while at work, some clients try to flirt with me which I dread. I try my best to deter the perpetrators to no avail. At one occasion, a client who had flirted with me was deterred by my friend, Bethany, who in the pass, faced sexual harassment from a perpetrator. She filed a misconduct charge against a perpetrator because he had flirted with her in a manner that made the recipient uncomfortable. Deterring these individuals is quite difficult, usually misconduct filings deters perpetrators from flirting and harassment. They won’t stop harassing the recipients despite being repeatedly told to stop. Bethany felt uneasy and uncomfortable during that situation. She tried her best to deter the perpetrator. She took some days off of work for that reason. When I heard that story, I was shocked because it happened to someone very close to me, and I felt bad for her. I reminded her that I will always be there for her if she needed me. She managed to make me nervous every time a m...

Office Politics

With office politics being a common occurrence in populated firms, I figured I don’t want to get sucked up in office gossip which could hinder my performance more often than not. I know some friends who got sucked up in office politics which hindered their execution times. One should never undermine the effects of workplace gossip. Undermining it might lead to broken friendships, withheld secrets, and other unpleasant events. Hindering someone’s work performance is as damaging as withholding their paychecks. I know someone  that succumbed to hazing during the first week at the firm. He undermined it at first and withheld his thoughts but after weeks of it he told his boss. I congratulated him for talking to his boss about the situation, and I encouraged him to continue to act like that. He became more confident after this incident.I gave him good advice, and I hope that he will listen to me more often. I also had a similar experience but not with  coworkers. It was rela...

Internships

Back in high school I attended two internships. One of them was my internship at the Montreal Transport Society in the department of justice that gave me the opportunity to set my foot in the door of office administration and human resources. I was able to start learning the ropes and manage complex systems related to law. This could overwhelm some but for me it was quite enjoyable. At times, I was overwhelmed by the workload, but I was able to mitigate it with the help of other interns. That came in handy especially near the end of the on-the-job-training period, where we had a lot of work to do. Some days we needed to test drive new research tools and examine its performance. Those websites come in handy when I need to find an important document or a specific law. Once, I test drove one of them, and it completely crashed the computer.  Overall, I really appreciated this experience, and it confirmed my career choice.
